Q&A with Paulina Domagala

A Q&A session with Paulina Domagała, founder of AestheLab Clinic and award-winning aesthetic professional, as she shares insights on her journey, the future of aesthetic medicine, and what it takes to succeed in the beauty industry.

In Poland, you worked in the field of public relations and marketing as well as in the IT industry – you worked in a corporation. This seems like a very popular and stable industry. Yet, you decided to leave and build your own event agency. What made you make this decision?

I joined the mentioned corporation as a copywriter. Quickly, after just a few months, I was promoted to the position of PR and Marketing Manager. I loved this job, the innovations, the fast pace of life, and the constant “everything for yesterday” mentality. I introduced services packaged as products to the market. I organized many events. I learned a lot there and, importantly, I believed in myself. Although working 16 hours a day gave me a lot of adrenaline, I felt burnt out by the end. Something was not right. I missed that moment when I could do something for myself. Therefore, when I got the chance to collaborate on a campaign, I decided it was time and I was ready to take a step towards complete independence – I opened my own event and PR agency.

So, there are no impossible things, especially for strong women.

I agree with you. It reminded me of my mother’s words, who always says that I am “a woman for whom nothing is impossible.” I believe in myself. Everything I set my mind to comes true sooner or later. I believe that we must focus on our goals and be grateful for every little thing that happens to us. Working on oneself, on one’s own mind, taking care of one’s energy, and selecting thoughts are very important. Especially in discovering those reserves of energy and the voice that lies deep within us, which eventually leads us to take that “milestone step.” I suppressed that voice within me for a long time. I was constantly tired and frustrated. I threw myself into work, giving as much as possible, waiting patiently because I knew that everything I did would one day lead me to the place I had dreamed of since I was a child.

But that’s not the end. A few years ago, you moved to Malta, and a new professional path opened up… This time in the beauty industry. And again, I ask, why this choice? You seem to like taking on new challenges and showing yourself in different roles?

All my life, I dreamed of a white medical coat. And as I mentioned – nothing is impossible. Being in a new place required adaptation, so it started with beauty treatments, and now I perform aesthetic medicine treatments. At first, I worked for someone and learned the industry from the inside, until I finally decided to open my own business again.

Was the clinic a breakthrough in your life?

Definitely. Very unexpected. I met wonderful people, learned amazing things, and continue to develop. This pushed me to become a medical cosmetologist. I am also studying medicine, I want to become a surgeon, my next life dream is coming true.

Does being a Polish woman in Malta make it easier?

Definitely not. Malta is very insular, so an outsider introducing innovative treatments is perceived by people in aesthetic industry here – as a threat.

How do you assess the local beauty market? What are the development opportunities, what are the chances, and maybe barriers? Did Malta surprise you in any way?

It surprised me with its very slow development, or rather lack thereof, and the lack of innovative solutions, which made it difficult for me – a person from Warsaw – to work. Additionally, the low quality of local treatments. My favorite hairdresser is in Warsaw, and the same goes for aesthetic medicine, so everything I couldn’t do myself ended up with a plane ticket to the capital.

On the other hand, Malta also surprised me with the beauty of this slowness, the peace that comes with it, and the ability to savor the time, the wind, the sea, the sun. But also the rain, when it finally comes.

The Maltese beauty market is constantly developing. Five years ago, permanent makeup here looked like a line drawn with a marker. Fortunately, this is slowly changing, and the opportunities for development are enormous. However, it is very difficult to persuade clients to change their habits. Unfortunately, here it’s still about “more and stronger.” However, I am pleased that Maltese women are slowly starting to embrace modern, more innovative, and more natural solutions. They agree to skin regeneration with tissue stimulators, treatments after which one looks healthy and natural, instead of the constant filling and stretching of tissues with fillers.

Which treatments are popular, and which are definitely avoided?

Due to the prevailing sweet laziness in Malta, anti-cellulite, body shaping, and slimming treatments are definitely the most popular.

Also, lash extensions are very popular here, and women visit the hairdresser at least once a week. Following this trend, I took a risk and introduced eyelash and brow lamination. It took me a lot of time, but it turned out to be a huge success. I also invested in endermologie and microneedle radiofrequency medical device, exosomes, tissue stimulators – everything that emphasizes natural beauty and supports the natural renewal processes of the skin.

The clinic also offers cavi lipo, platelet-rich plasma treatments, fibrin, dermapen, and of course, botox. We offer beautiful, natural-looking permanent makeup, which is finally gaining more popularity here, we offer PDO threads, and we use fillers only when the client’s skin is in good condition.

Fortunately, huge lips and continuous fillers injections are also becoming a thing of the past.

Regardless of the place in business, you need to constantly develop, observe trends, be flexible, and quickly respond to changes and customer needs. How do you handle this?

Great, and I definitely agree with that. That’s how it should be, as new, better solutions for skin stimulation and regeneration are constantly emerging. I am hungry for knowledge and love to develop. It gives me incredible satisfaction when I see the results of my work, and clients feel great about themselves, which automatically boosts their self-esteem. Sometimes little changes so much.

What new treatments will you introduce to your offer in the near future?

I plan to collaborate with surgeons and the local hospital. I want to introduce plastic surgery treatments to the offer, renting operating and hospital rooms for these procedures. However, in my medical career, I will lean towards neurosurgery. In the future, I plan to develop on a really large scale.

Finally, I ask for a moment of reflection. When setting up the clinic, did you suspect that it would turn into such a beautiful adventure?

When I came here for a moment, I didn’t even think I would stay. The decision was very spontaneous and unexpected. I was probably surprised myself, but I believe that listening to intuition and following what the heart tells you is the key to success.

Although, to be honest, I always expect a beautiful adventure from life, maybe that’s why I always get it. I am a person who expects the best. Even in those worse moments, I remind myself of this. Bad times are temporary, they quickly pass. All the hard times, tears, and breakdowns are lessons and push us towards something better, which often waits just around the corner. That’s why it’s so important not to give up and to constantly believe in yourself, even when others doubt. Sometimes everything has to fall apart to make room for the new and beautiful, although at first it doesn’t seem that way. You just have to trust the process. And yourself.

So, can it be said that Malta changed your life for the better?

Definitely. I am a happy woman. I have a group of wonderful friends, a great team of doctors. This is my second family, on whom I can always count. My clinic was created in two months with the invaluable help of friends. We renovated together, painted the walls together at night, exhausted but happy. Help came from each of them. We always celebrate our successes together. We support each other in difficult times and celebrate the good ones.

Additionally, in December 2023, I achieved two great successes on the European stage. I am proud to announce that I was honored with two prestigious awards: Best Face Beauty and Aesthetic Professional of the Year 2023 and Best Women in Customer Business. These are huge honors for me and a recognition that further emphasizes the value of my work and involvement in the beauty and cosmetology industry. These awards are proof that the effort and hard work put into developing my AestheLab Clinic and caring for Clients have been widely appreciated. Now I can’t wait to become a great surgeon.
